This blog post is not dedicated to GIS, informatics, or Python but it is an evaluation of how the business, our business, can and should adapt to future challenges.
CO2 emissions are growing and many local institutions and NGO are trying to find a solution to this problem.
We are already talking about mitigating and not preventing the effects of climate change (yes, climate change exists and is real).
Recently another huge global event is the spreading of the COVID-19 virus: especially in Italy we are facing some challenges we never had before (the entire Italy is considered red zone and we are not allowed to move around except for a few cases).
We asatFaunalia are asking ourself how can we face this challenges in an innovative and practical way.
Since ever we always try to minimize transfers and movement and we prefer to use remote tools for our periodical meetings.
Many of our works can be done from our office (consultancy, development, etc.), but others not. Training is one of them: we always have to move around when we make training.
Thanks to some software we have calculated the carbon footprint for one of our training in Pontedera (Pisa).
The values used (participants number, transports, food, hotels, etc.) are average values. All the software returned different values, but they always have been comparable.
Here a quick summary of the results for a 3 days training in Pontedera with 10 participants, where the majority of the participants use the train and come from the surroundings. No airplanes are involved and just a few participants stays in hotels:
0.6 tons of CO2 are emitted.
Mobility is responsible for the 85% of the total CO2.
The most obvious solution is to use the available technology to do all the work that can be done remotely, so that the movement are reduced.
Calls are a typical solution already used by small and big companies that have workers spread around the world.
We are asking ourself: why not using a smart and low energy consumption system of almost zero emission?
There are many tools that allows to have a near-live experience without losing important parts.
What we want to achieve is to offer all of our best quality services, but reducing the impact on Earth.
Smart working allows to have a huge flexibility with more frequent training sessions, thematic trainings, etc.
Stay tuned!
